Kiholo Bay is an off the beaten path hike that will take you to the beautiful turquoise water, tide pools, black sand beach, and basking Green Sea Turtles. This area is also full of history and Hawaiian heritage. There are two different routes to the bay. The main one starts at the Kiholo Bay State Park Reserve trailhead.

Kīholo is part of a coastal area once coveted by Hawaiian chiefs for its fisheries, fishponds and anchialine pools. Overview The royal fishpond at Kīholo stands as a testament to Native Hawaiian ingenuity—a highly refined aquaculture system that provided a sustainable supply of fish to the surrounding community for centuries.

Built during the monarchy of King Kamehameha I in 1820, as an engineered fishpond, it spanned approximately 2 miles with a 6-foot high by 20 feet wide lava rock wall, protecting the bay from the ocean currents. In 1859, a lava flow from the Mauna Loa volcano, reached Kiholo Bay and devastated the southern portion of the ancient fishpond.

Kīholo Bay is a protected series of calm, turquoise tidepools inside a picturesque bay. It's a great place to spend a beach day, especially if you want to be a little more off the beaten path. This bay used to be a bit "loved to death" by tourists and locals, but conservation efforts have really improved the location over the past few years.

Camping at Kiholo is allowed on weekends only (Friday-night through Sunday-night). Camping sites may be reserved up to 30 days in advance. Campsites are located along an unimproved gravel access road in a shaded kiawe (mesquite) grove fronting an 'ili'ili (pebble) beach. This is a remote area with no facilities and NO WATER .
